During a press briefing yesterday, Antonio Guterres' spokesperson rightly affirmed that the position of the UN Secretary General remains unchanged on Western Sahara.

The Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, is still calling for a self-determination referendum - a referendum provided for by a ceasefire signed under the auspices of the UN in 1991. But Rabat for its part offers autonomy for the territory, placed de facto in its bosom.

And since the departure of former German President Horst Köhler for health reasons in May 2019, the UN has still not found an emissary to replace him.
