While the arms speak again since last month in Western Sahara, Morocco records a diplomatic victory of size with

this American recognition of its sovereignty

 over this territory.

On the other hand, the Polisario Front does not like this American decision at all, as Oubi Bouchraya Bachir, representative of the movement for Europe and the European Union, explains.

It is a decision that goes against regional security and stability [...] which will surely have a negative impact on the UN's efforts to find a solution to the conflict

"The Polisario condemns with the strongest terms" the American position

Najem Sidi is the president of the French support committee for the people of Western Sahara, which supports the Polisario Front fight.

He also calls for the self-determination of the Sahrawis and for respect for international legality.

As the peoples of the world celebrate today December 10 the International Human Rights Day which affirmed the right of peoples to self-determination, to freedom, to democracy, to justice, this shows that Trump wants to dangle an image that does not comply with international legality [...] Trump shows that it is an exchange, he is trying to reward Morocco.

During a press briefing yesterday, Antonio Guterres' spokesperson rightly affirmed that the position of the UN Secretary General remains unchanged on Western Sahara.

Mr. Guterres "thinks (...) that the solution to this question can always be found on the basis of the resolutions of the Security Council".

Antonio Guterres calls on both parties "

to avoid any action that could further aggravate a tense situation

 ".

The Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, is still calling for a self-determination referendum - a referendum provided for by a ceasefire signed under the auspices of the UN in 1991. The United Nations operation in this file is taking place. calls on Minurso, the Mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara.

But Rabat for its part offers autonomy for the territory, placed de facto in its bosom.

In the Cherifian kingdom, we speak of the “southern provinces”, they have in particular been the subject of a major regionalization policy advanced since 2015.

So Morocco is expanding its footprint there, its “Moroccanness”: since the end of 2019, at least sixteen countries, mostly African, have already supported its position by opening diplomatic representations in Laayoune and Dakhla.

Even if the UN does not despair of finding a political outcome, the discussions have stalled for more than a year and a half now.

And since the departure of former German President Horst Köhler for health reasons in May 2019, the UN has still not found an emissary to replace him.
