Nordhausen (dpa / th) - The plant of the automotive supplier Eaton in Nordhausen will be closed at the end of the year.

Negotiations about the preservation of the traditional location and the approximately 250 jobs with Eaton Deutschland GmbH were not successful, said the second representative of IG Metall Nordhausen, Alexander Scharf, on Friday when asked.

He thus confirmed media reports.

Eaton announced the planned plant closure a few months ago.

According to Scharf, valves for engines are manufactured in the plant.

The company wants to relocate production to a plant in Poland.

Eaton Germany did not allow itself to be dissuaded from this by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, despite offers of assistance in maintaining the location.

A social plan was negotiated for the workforce, which also provides for severance payments.

In addition, a transfer company should be founded as a bridge, in which employees could be accepted for up to twelve months.

Several announced site closings by auto suppliers in Northern Thuringia had alarmed politicians in recent months.

"At least in some cases, the impression arose that high-income companies are using the Corona crisis to reduce capacities at the expense of their employees or to relocate them to supposedly low-wage locations," said Minister of Economics Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD).

There is also concern about the locations of the suppliers Continental in Mühlhausen and Norma in Gerbershausen (Eichsfeld district).
