Paris (dpa) - The US Internet giants Google and Amazon are said to pay millions in fines in France for violating legal rules for cookies.

The French data protection authority CNIL announced on Thursday in Paris that Google will be punished with 100 million euros and Amazon with 35 million euros.

The supervisors accuse the websites Google.fr and Amazon.fr of automatically receiving cookies on their computers.

"Several of these cookies had advertising purposes," reported the authority.
