For our generation, the Holocaust often seems like a distant part of German history that we ourselves have nothing to do with.

But this part of German history must not be forgotten, because it gives rise to the obligation for us and future generations to always be vigilant about anti-Semitism and to take decisive action against it.

We were accordingly shocked that the Jusos showed their solidarity with the Fatah youth in the past week.

They not only dubbed the Fatah youth a "sister organization", but also gave them the right to veto their own decisions.

Awareness of the problem?

Nothing.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) also defines anti-Semitism as the delegitimization of the State of Israel.

The Fatah youth openly denies Israel's right to exist and supports the international boycott campaign BDS against Israel.

If the Jusos now claim that it is all about dialogue with all parties in the region, then this not only contradicts the facts, but also shows an ignorance of the social developments in Germany.

Clear edge against anti-Semitism looks different.

The Jusos' position comes at a time when the number of anti-Semitic crimes rose by 14 percent between 2018 and 2019 alone.

As a state, Germany has the task of guaranteeing the safety of Jews.

That is why the fight against anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism must not remain lip service.

Concrete measures are needed to actively counteract undesirable social developments.

Anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism must not be given a place in our society.

"Anyone who has a problem with Jews is in the wrong country here"

For the second part of the WELT politics portrait with Cem Özdemir (Greens) we meet in the government district in Berlin.

Here the 54-year-old speaks about his work in the NSU committee, anti-Semitism and political mistakes that he regrets to this day.

School education is a crucial element in this.

We demand a compulsory visit to a Holocaust memorial during the school career, a multimedia and digitally always available processing of personal reports from victims of the Holocaust, as long as this is still possible, an examination of the religion of Judaism and a treatment of the history of Israel in class.

Second, an appropriately trained executive is also required to successfully combat anti-Semitism: We need police officers who can recognize and classify anti-Semitic violence.

The aim must be to document anti-Semitism as well as possible and also to include attacks that are below the criminal liability threshold.

In addition, one should not turn a blind eye to the fact that, in addition to ethnic-racial anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic tendencies also occur in immigrant groups, because anti-Semitism, for example, was part of the raison d'être in the home country.

Refugees, Islamic associations and mosques should therefore exchange ideas with Jews.

At the same time, we advocate a zero tolerance limit for anti-Semitic crimes and demand the consistent application of the Residence Act, which in many cases enables deportation.

These examples would be only three pieces in a large mosaic in the fight against anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, but the direction has become clear: instead of alliance with anti-Semitic organizations and thereby making them somewhat socially acceptable, we have to have a clear edge against each variant of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.
