With only three weeks left until the turn of the year, the hope is alive in the EU to finally be able to launch the next long-term budget for the years 2021–27 and at the same time launch the Union's large corona support.

The agreement on the long-term budget was made after a record-breaking budget meeting, says SVT's correspondent David Boati in Rapport.

- Yesterday, the presidency country Germany had a meeting with Poland and Hungary where a compromise was negotiated and now today all countries have agreed to this so it went away, he says in the program.

However, there is criticism that the agreement is a concession for Hungary and Poland, which have threatened to veto the agreement that will ensure that all member states follow basic principles of the rule of law and democracy.

Stefan Löfven satisfied

However, the compromise that has been worked out has been accepted by all member states.

In Sweden, the Riksdag's EU committee said yes already at an extra convened telephone meeting on Thursday morning.

Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) is satisfied.

"For the first time since the EU was formed, a link is now being made between the rule of law and the payment of money - it is historic and a great success for Sweden, which has been pushing for this for several years," Löfven writes in a text message to TT from inside the summit .

The compromise reached - which the Prime Minister only wants to call a clarification - is, among other things, that a statement from the European Court of Justice must be sought before the new rule of law comes into force.

Thus, the introduction will be delayed, which has been interpreted as a concession to the two veto-threatening countries, both of which have parliamentary elections in the coming years.

To ensure a definite yes, the agreement also needs the support of the European Parliament, which is expected to vote on the budget next week.

So far, at least the two largest party groups have said yes.
