Bonn (dpa) - Four female and six female scientists will receive the renowned Leibniz Prize 2021. The award, which comes with prize money of 2.5 million euros, goes to two researchers from the humanities and social sciences, the natural sciences and two from the Engineering and four from the life sciences.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) announced on Thursday in Bonn.

Because of the corona pandemic, the most important German research award will be awarded in a virtual setting on March 15, 2021.

The researchers can use the prize money for their work for up to seven years without any bureaucratic effort.

The youngest award winner is the 40-year-old biodiversity researcher Prof. Nico Eisenhauer from the University of Leipzig.

The award recognizes his outstanding work on the effects of global change on biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

"He is already one of the leading scientists in his field," declared the DFG.
