Opposition candidate in Ghana John Mahama disputes his presidential defeat against outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, reelected for a second term according to the official results, as well as those of the legislative elections, he said Thursday, December 10 in the evening to the press.

"It was clear from the legally expressed results that the Democratic National Congress had won the presidential and parliamentary elections," he said.

"We will not accept the fraudulent results of these elections and we will take all legitimate measures to reverse this injustice," he continued.

According to the Election Commission on Wednesday, the head of state, leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), won 51.59% of the vote against 47.36% for the opposition candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama.

Only 515,524 votes separate President Nana Akufo-Addo from his predecessor John Mahama, who became leader of the opposition in 2016. The NDC immediately announced that it rejected this result, but candidate John Mahama had not yet spoken .

Victory considered regular by observers

"Many measures have been taken to manipulate the results of the election in favor of the outgoing president," said John Mahama, denouncing in particular a strong military presence deployed during the count to "intimidate" and "reverse the results".

The final results of the legislative elections have not yet been announced by the Election Commission, but it has published provisional results.

Of the 275 deputies, 137 belong to the presidential majority, 136 to John Mahama's party and one is independent.

A deputy position in the Bono Est region has not yet been formalized.

John Mahama says his party, the NDC, "won a majority of 140 seats".

Earlier today, Nana Akufo-Addo's victory was deemed fair by the Coalition of Ghanaian Election Observers (Codeo), which monitored 4,000 of 38,000 offices across the country.
