Abu Dhabi (dpa) - Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton (35) returns to his Mercedes after his positive test for the corona virus at the season finale in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

As the racing team and the world motor sport association Fia announced, the Briton will receive approval for the Grand Prix on Sunday (2.10 p.m. / RTL and Sky) after several negative corona tests.

Hamilton had tested positive for the corona virus twice a week ago and then had to go into quarantine in Bahrain.

He therefore missed the penultimate World Championship round last Sunday in Sakhir, where Williams regular driver George Russell replaced him.

The quarantine has ended and Hamilton traveled to Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

When he arrived he was tested negative and thus fulfilled the last condition for access to the Formula 1 paddock.

There he can already participate in training on Friday, Russell will drive for Williams again on the weekend.

Hamilton had previously said in a video about his infection: "It was definitely one of the toughest weeks I've had in a while."

At the same time he announced that he would start in the last Grand Prix of the year if he was allowed to do so.

He has been the new world champion since the Turkish Grand Prix in mid-November.

However, his sporting future is unclear.

Hamilton's contract ends at the end of the year, with an extension for the Silver Arrows being very likely.
