Last year, wind power in Skåne produced 1629 GWh of electricity.

This is roughly equivalent to the heating of 80,000 villas.

But Skåne could produce significantly more wind power electricity.

- We were out quite early with wind power in Skåne, so we have many old wind turbines that could be replaced with more efficient, modern facilities, says Sandra Johanne Selander.

Offshore wind power most efficient

Sandra Johanne Selander estimates that electricity production could be increased by about a quarter by replacing old wind turbines with larger and more powerful ones - so-called repowering.

But whether it is practically possible in all places is not yet known.

Most efficient would have been to build several offshore wind farms around the Scanian coast.

Of the wind farms that have come quite far in the process of being realized at sea off the coast of Skåne, such a plant can produce 2.5 terawatt hours per year, compared with the current production in Skåne of between 1.4 - 1.7 terawatt hours.

But so far there is only one offshore wind farm in Skåne - Lillgrund outside Malmö.

Other projects have been stopped for various reasons, above all it is the defense that puts a stop to it.

Important electricity producer already today

Wind power is controversial and evokes strong emotions.

In addition to concerns about noise, shadows and a faded landscape, wind power clashes with nature interests and wildlife.

However, Sandra Johanne Selander is convinced that wind power is here to stay.

And will grow as a power producer both in Skåne and the rest of the country.

- Wind power produces over ten percent and we are not far away from 20 percent, of the annual electricity production in Sweden today.

Wind power is the type of renewable energy that, in addition to water, has the great realizable potential in the coming decades, says Sandra Johanne Selander.
