Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Magdeburg's Lord Mayor Lutz Trümper (SPD) wants to give up his office early next summer.

«I will probably be between 1.6.

and 1.8.

to retire, "said the 65-year-old on Monday in a personal statement in the Magdeburg city council.

"I will definitely no longer run in 2022."

Trümper has been city councilor in the state capital, which has around 240,000 inhabitants, since 2001.

He was re-elected twice, most recently in 2015.

The mayor said in his statement: «You also make mistakes in life.

In 2017 and 2018 I did two.

2017 was the first to rejoin the SPD. "

Trümper left the SPD in October 2015 because there had been an internal party dispute over refugee policy.

Around 20 months later, he announced that he would rejoin the party.

His second mistake in 2018 after a change in the law was a statement that he was thinking about running again as mayor after 65.

"In reality that was never an issue for me."

Trümper showed in his personal statement clear displeasure with parts of local politics and processes in the administration.
