Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) awarded the Bridge Prize to seven projects on the International Volunteer Day.

"This award is particularly important to me," she said after a message at the virtual award ceremony on Saturday.

"It focuses on the people who build bridges with their commitment and contribute to cohesion in our society."

Dreyer honored seven projects that “promote the coexistence of people with and without disabilities, young and old and people of different origins, as well as the fight against social disadvantage, exclusion and discrimination”.

The award went to projects from Trier, Mainz, Bitburg, Diez (Rhein-Lahn district), Trippstadt (Kaiserslautern district), Rockenhausen (Donnersberg district) and Altenkirchen.

All the projects receive prize money of 1000 euros each.

The award in the newly introduced category of “Civic engagement against hatred and agitation” went to the “Active against Right” working group from Rockenhausen.

At demonstrations and events, the working group “clearly opposed racism, the humiliation of those who think differently and right-wing slogans,” it said in the explanation.

According to the State Chancellery, the bridge prize was awarded for the 13th time in 2020.

The award recognizes projects, initiatives, associations and citizens who, with their voluntary work, promote dialogue between a wide variety of people.
