Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior expects increasing numbers of hacker attacks on important computer systems in the country.

"Baden-Württemberg is without a doubt a lucrative destination for cyber criminals," said Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU).

The many successful companies in the country, research institutions, but also the administration, public institutions and sensitive places such as hospitals - they are all in focus, said Strobl.

So far this year there have been two attacks on system-relevant computer networks in hospitals in Baden-Württemberg.

This was announced by the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Stuttgart.

"In both cases, the malicious files were detected in good time by those responsible on the server, so that no damage occurred," said a spokeswoman.

No information is available on the perpetrators' goals.

In 2019, several medical practices were attacked.

In most cases, the perpetrators used blackmail software.

With appropriate programs, known in technical jargon as ransomware, an intruder can prevent the computer owner from accessing data.

The perpetrators usually demand a ransom to decrypt the programs or release the computer.

The Central Contact Point Cybercrime for Companies and Authorities (ZAC) is located at the LKA.

It carries out prevention work in companies, for example, and also distributes targeted warning messages about cyber attacks via social media.

Cybersecurity is an important location factor, said Strobl.

He has tabled a bill to improve this in the Southwest.

Among other things, a cybersecurity agency is to be set up in spring 2021, which is to be fully operational in 2022.

The ministry is looking for experts for this task because it expects the number of cases in spying on and intercepting data to continue to rise.

The number of hacker attacks in the health sector is increasing nationwide.

In response to a small request from the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) announced that between January and the beginning of November 2020 there had been 43 hacker attacks in the healthcare system across Germany.

Hospitals were particularly affected.

16 such cases were recorded last year.

According to the BSI, there were only two attacks by hackers on sensitive systems in the health sector in 2016.
