Berlin (dpa) - Almost two weeks before the start of the season of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), which has already been postponed several times, the Eisbären Berlin have to completely realign their preparation program.

Actually, the capital city should have competed against EHC Red Bull Munich and Adler Mannheim in the Magentasport Cup in the coming days.

But after the number of positive corona tests in the squad had increased further, both encounters were canceled.

Training operations are now also suspended until further notice.

“After the first positive cases were announced, we reacted immediately, stopped training and sent the team to quarantine at home.

Unfortunately, more positive results have now been found, ”said Eisbären CEO Peter John Lee in a statement from the club.

"Even if we would have liked to have finished the Magentasport Cup, everyone's health is of course in the foreground."

The club did not announce how many team members are now affected.

But although none of those who tested positive have so far had severe symptoms, the Berliners now have to take a break of several days: All players, supervisors and coaches will be in quarantine at home until next Thursday.

It is currently unclear whether regular training can take place immediately afterwards.

Until the first main round game on December 18th against the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven there is hardly any time left to bring the team into league form.

The polar bears were still a long way from that: All four games they played in the DEL preparatory tournament were lost.
