Berlin (dpa) - The number of corona patients in German intensive care units has exceeded the threshold of 4,000 for the first time.

On Friday, the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Divi) reported 4011 people in intensive care.

That was 31 more than the day before, as the Divi daily report shows.

60 percent of patients are ventilated invasively (as of December 4th, 12.15 p.m.).

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of newly reported deaths was the third highest since the pandemic began.

After the rapid increase in the number of infections, including in October, it was expected that the number of seriously ill and dead people would also increase significantly.

Despite a partial lockdown that has been in place since the beginning of November, the infection rate has stagnated at a largely high level for several weeks.

The RKI gave the 7-day incidence - i.e. the number of new corona cases per 100,000 inhabitants and week - on Friday as 134.7, a week earlier it was 136.5.

The health authorities reported to the RKI within 24 hours 432 people who died from or with the participation of a corona infection.

The previous high of 487 deaths was reached on Wednesday.

The total number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 18,034.

The Federal Statistical Office reported on Friday that five percent more people died in Germany in the first week of November than the average for the past four years.

According to preliminary results, at least 18,483 people died in the 45th calendar week (November 2-8, 2020).

The number of deaths in connection with Corona was also higher in Germany in the first week of November.

The RKI reported 1067 deaths in the period.

As before, a comparatively large number of people in Germany are infected with Corona.

The RKI counted 23,449 new infections on Friday.

This means that the value is slightly higher than the 22,806 cases from the previous week.

According to the RKI management report on Friday, the so-called seven-day R-value was 1.04 (previous day: 0.94).

This means that 100 infected people infect 104 more people.

The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If the value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection rate subsides.

In the intensive care units, where the development of the number of infections only becomes noticeable with a time lag, the number of available beds has decreased significantly in recent weeks.

According to the Divi report without an emergency reserve, it is currently around 5000. According to Divi information, this development could also be related to the fact that some clinics initially incorrectly stated the number of their free beds.

Instead of the “ready-to-use beds”, for which nursing staff is also available, some have forwarded the actual number of beds to the Divi-Register.

This has since been corrected so that the number of beds in the register fell in October and November.

Another reason, according to Divi, may be that nursing staff are absent due to illness and the hospitals can therefore accept fewer patients.
