One evening at the end of October, two men smashed the glass entrance doors to the Alsterhaus luxury department store on Jungfernstieg.

Then a burglar drove an e-scooter through the first floor.

On his trip he stole numerous bags and fled a little later on the e-scooter.

The damage ran into the tens of thousands.

It wasn't the only “lightning break” in the city of Hamburg.

Less than a month later, the police arrested the perpetrators and people behind the series of robberies.

There are three men between the ages of 19 and 42.

All three suspects are in custody.

Two of them committed the crimes while imprisoned for other offenses but on leave.

Handbags worth 60,000 euros stolen

The investigators accuse the three men of a total of five break-ins and robberies.

"Since October 2020, there have been break-ins in the Neustadt and Ottensen areas with identical procedures to the detriment of sales outlets of high-quality goods," said police spokesman Daniel Ritterskamp.

The spokesman: "The perpetrators smashed the shop windows, some of which were secured with safety glass, with previously unknown objects and stole high-quality handbags, gold jewelry and similar luxury goods from the displays." It was only in mid-October that handbags worth 60,000 euros were looted in a lightning break in the Hanseviertel .

The investigators came on the trail of the three when the investigations revealed that they were also "scouting out corresponding shops in the rest of northern Germany," said Ritterskamp.

When there was a break-in in Lübeck at the beginning of November, police officers were able to temporarily arrest a 19-year-old German from Hamburg-Billstedt in the act.

Police secure cell phones and 1700 euros

Intensive investigations also revealed initial suspicions against a 42-year-old Iranian from Billstedt and a 39-year-old German from Langenhorn.

"The men were already in custody, but were on leave at the time of the offense," said the police spokesman.

While the 39- and 42-year-olds secured the acts, the 19-year-old carried out the break-ins.

During the searches of the suspects' homes, the police seized cell phones and other evidence, but also 1700 euros, which allegedly came from the sale of the stolen property.

Ritterskamp: “At this point in time, the men were on leave again and could be found at their home addresses.
