Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The Hamburg Constitutional Court ruled today (10:00 a.m.) on the admissibility of the referendum to remove the debt brake from the constitution of the Hanseatic city.

The red-green Senate called the court because it considers the initiators' concerns to be unconstitutional.

Because of the corona pandemic, the hearing will take place in the Goethe Hall of the Hamburg lodges, the court said.

The starting point of the procedure is the popular initiative launched in April 2019 to delete the debt brake included in the Hamburg constitution in 2012.

After the citizens did not want to take on the initiative's concerns, they applied for a referendum as the next step in popular legislation in March - whereupon the Senate appealed to the Constitutional Court.

In the opinion of the Senate, the draft of the initiative for a law to remove the debt brake from the Hamburg constitution violates the Basic Law.

The initiators, on the other hand, believe that it is clear that it is about the net borrowing ban in the state constitution, not the ban enshrined in the Basic Law.
