Nuremberg / Crailsheim (dpa) - The transport ministers of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have launched the first cross-border S-Bahn connection with a joint declaration.

The connection between Crailsheim near Schwäbisch Hall and Nuremberg should be completed by December 2024 at the latest.

Both the Bavarian Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) and her counterpart Winfried Hermann (Greens) said that the two countries were moving closer together.

“That's the kind of innovation we need.

We have to think a bit bigger in the transport sector and mobility issues are the future issues, ”said Schreyer at a joint event on Friday.

"We have set ourselves an ambitious schedule," said Hermann.

Together, however, the project can be completed on time.

A jointly financed report forms the basis of the S-Bahn extension.

According to Hermann, there is a strong need in the Baden-Württemberg region around Crailsheim to be connected to the S-Bahn to Nuremberg.

The new connection should make the route more attractive for commuters.

Train drivers from both countries should benefit from a uniform transport tariff.

When expanding, the S4 route from Dombühl near Ansbach to Crailsheim must be extended.
