The report notes that US President Donald Trump has ordered the transfer of most of the US military from Somalia by early 2021.

"The US is not leaving or leaving Africa," the statement said.

The Pentagon noted that, despite the withdrawal of American troops from Somalia, they will continue to fight against violent extremist organizations that may threaten US security.

"The United States will retain the ability to carry out targeted counter-terrorism operations in Somalia," the department added.

It is clarified that part of the American troops can be redeployed outside East Africa, and the rest - to countries not bordering on Somalia.

Earlier, the acting head of the Pentagon Christopher Miller said that by January 15, 2021, the United States would reduce the number of its troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to 2,500.
