Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has defended the extension of the partial lockdown imposed due to the corona pandemic until January 10th, which was decided by the federal and state governments.

With 661 newly infected people, Brandenburg currently has the highest level since the pandemic began, said the head of government in Potsdam on Thursday.

“And unfortunately also 16 people who have died - a total of 425 people who have died with or from a corona infection.

That's too much."

Therefore, the necessary measures would have to be maintained in the coming weeks, underlined Woidke.

Restaurants, museums, theaters and leisure facilities have been closed in the partial lockdown since the beginning of November.

"We know that with the measures we have to take, we are intervening deeply in people's lives across Germany - but also here in Brandenburg," admitted the head of government.

"That's why we don't make it easy for ourselves, and that's why we have these frequent votes."

However, these are necessary in order to proceed as uniformly as possible in Germany.

Woidke pointed out that special measures should be taken in corona hotspots.

These included the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district with more than 300 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, and the Spree-Neisse district and the city of Cottbus with values around 200. In the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, stricter restrictions on public life are to apply from Monday .

They include measures in school operations, the right to visit nursing homes and burials.
