Magdeburg / Halle (dpa / sa) - The state school office has had a regular director for the first time in more than two years.

Education Minister Marco Tullner (CDU) appointed the previous deputy head, Gerhard Degner, as the new head of the authorities in Halle on Thursday, as the Ministry of Education announced.

Degner said he would "with all his strength and consistency" continue on the path of service-oriented recruitment of new teachers.

Tullner said that in view of the major challenges facing the school administration, he was glad to have an experienced administrative specialist at the head of the school office.

The 60-year-old Degner has been Deputy Head of the State School Office since September 2018.

Before that, he worked for the state police for many years, including as head of the police department in Dessau-Roßlau.

With his current appointment, a bridging period of more than two years, during which State Secretary for Education Eva Feussner also headed the state school office, ends.

Due to ongoing legal disputes, the senior position could not be filled earlier.

The background to this was a personnel decision that Tullner made shortly after he took office as Minister of Education: In November 2016, the CDU politician dismissed the then head of the school office shortly before the end of the two-year probationary period.

This defended himself legally through several court instances.

A ministry spokesman said on Thursday that all "occupation-preventing procedures" have been completed.

He did not give any further details.
