Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer is still skeptical about a Berlinale in the usual framework in February.

"Everyone knows that a normal Berlinale like we did not come," said the left-wing politician on Thursday of the German Press Agency (dpa) in Berlin.

"The makers of the Berlinale will think in different scenarios, I am firmly convinced of that."

At the same time, Lederer pointed out that the film festival was a federal cultural institution and that he was not informed about the details.

"Whether in February physical enjoyment of culture will be possible again to a certain extent, I remain cautious when I look at the Berlin pandemic figures," said Lederer.

"I'm just referring to the fact that many other cultural actors manage to create hybrid or purely digital events and that turned out to be great things."

At the same time, the Senator for Culture emphasized that he thought it was right «that the makers of the Berlinale are working towards ensuring that there can also be physical encounters at this Berlinale.

But if you look at the pandemic numbers, you also know that the risk that this will not be possible or not to the extent possible is simply real. "

Along with Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the world's major film festivals.

The International Film Festival in Berlin is also the festival with the most crowds - thousands of visitors come to the film screenings and the red carpet every year.

Most recently, around 330,000 tickets had been sold.

The next Berlinale is planned for February 11-21, 2021.

The organizers of the Berlinale had emphasized that they still wanted to organize the Berlinale as a physical festival and so “to offer a place of exchange and encounter in 2021 too”.

The Berlinale has been following "the Covid 19 situation very closely for months," said managing director Mariette Rissenbeek most recently.

"We are currently checking the feasibility of the festival in February."
