Rostock (dpa / mv) - The Rostock tropical medicine specialist Emil Reisinger has high hopes for the announced vaccinations against Covid-19 disease.

"If the vaccine is available in sufficient quantities, we should be through the worst three months later," said Reisinger of the German press agency.

The prerequisite for this is good effectiveness and good tolerance of the vaccine.

Reisinger is one of the state government's advisors on dealing with the pandemic.

It is important to first vaccinate the elderly over 65 years of age, said Reisinger.

Most deaths would occur in this age group; corona patients of this age would also have to be treated most frequently in intensive care units.

In the UK, vaccinations are due to start next week. This is where the vaccine from the Mainz-based manufacturer Biontech and its US partner Pfizer is used. In the corona pandemic, Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) is also betting that the first vaccinations will be completed in January. "Our goal is that the first risk groups and care workers are vaccinated in January," said Spahn on Tuesday on Deutschlandfunk.
