Vienna (dpa) - After a series of Islamist attacks on ICE trains on the Munich-Nuremberg route, a 44-year-old Iraqi was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday evening in Vienna.

The jury was convinced that the man was acting on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia, reported the Austrian news agency APA.

His wife was acquitted before the Vienna Regional Court.

She denied any knowledge.

The man was found guilty of multiple attempted murder as a terrorist offense, serious damage to property as a terrorist offense and membership in a terrorist organization.

The decisions are not final.

The Iraqi wanted to carry out several attacks on trains on the ICE route between Munich and Nuremberg in 2018 with wedges and a steel cable.

In Berlin, too, he tried to derail a train.

He failed with his plan.

It only remained due to technical faulty designs by the man in the event of property damage to the locomotives.

Nobody got hurt.

The Iraqi living in Vienna as a recognized refugee has confessed to the deeds.

But he denied any intention to kill and any terrorist background.

"He wanted to attract attention," said his defense attorney.

His goal was to withdraw foreign troops from Iraq.
