Memmingen (dpa / lby) - The US group Amazon wants to build a distribution center for its parcels in the Allgäu.

"We are currently examining the possibility of opening a distribution center in the region around Memmingen," said an Amazon spokesman for the Allgäuer Zeitung (Friday edition).

According to the company, there are currently six such centers for the “last mile” of delivery across Bavaria.

There, the parcels from the larger logistics centers are primarily delivered at night and sorted for subsequent delivery to the customers.

According to the newspaper, it is about a plot of land near Memmingen Airport - even if no cargo flights are planned.

An Amazon spokeswoman did not want to comment on the details of the considerations at the request of the German press agency.

According to the newspaper, the project has also led to criticism from local politicians in the region. Online trading is a major threat to city centers.
