The breakage of a water distribution pipe of the Canal de Isabel II has caused a flood this Thursday in the street of Alcalá on the corner of Príncipe de Vergara that has flooded the Velázquez station and traffic jams in the area.
As a consequence of the breakdown, line 4 between the Goya and Colón stations has been cut from 5:45 p.m.
Initially the interruption of the service was going to be half an hour, but the repair work of the breakdown and the drainage work have delayed the reopening, as sources from Metro de Madrid have explained to Efe.
The water has also flooded the basement of two businesses and has caused a sinkhole in the sidewalk.
After the breakdown, the water began to flow through the streets of Goya, Velázquez and Príncipe de Vergara, a way that the Municipal Police had to cut off traffic in the section between the streets of Alcalá and Jorge Juan, as indicated to Efe a spokeswoman for Emergencias Madrid.
A team of firefighters from the Madrid City Council has come to the place to clean up the areas affected by the water and check for damage.
