Lärz (dpa) - After the bird flu case in a laying hen operation in Lärz (Mecklenburg Lake District), the cause of the outbreak is still unclear.

As the head of the district veterinary office, Guntram Wagner, said on Thursday, the 29,000 or so animals were only kept in stables as prescribed and were no longer allowed outside.

According to previous investigations, the company in a small district of Lärz has complied with regulations on “biosecurity”, such as changing employees' clothes and other disinfection measures.

There are more tests.

The avian influenza virus H5N8 was found in the company.

In the meantime, specialists have begun the mandatory killing and disposal of the animals, which are kept in two stalls, it said.

This should be completed as quickly as possible.

A smaller restricted area and a larger observation area with a radius of about ten kilometers were established around the small town.

Special restrictions apply there.

Poultry farmers in neighboring Brandenburg are also affected.

More than 600,000 chickens and other poultry are kept within a radius of 10 kilometers.

"So far there has been no other suspected case," said Wagner.

In the northeast, more than 100,000 chickens, ducks and geese have had to be killed and disposed of because of bird flu since November.

Scientists named contact with infected wild birds as the cause.
