Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin has ordered mass vaccinations in the country against Covid 19 to begin next week, adding that Russia has produced nearly two million doses of its Sputnik V vaccine.

The announcement came in the aftermath of London's go-ahead for the launch of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine starting next week.

Last week Russia reported interim test results showing Sputnik V is 95% effective, rivaling international competitors in effectiveness.

Sputnik V - dubbed in honor of the first Soviet satellite - is currently in its third and final phase of clinical trials involving around 40,000 volunteers.

Russia has registered 28,145 new cases of Covid-19 since yesterday, the highest number of daily infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

The total toll in the country has now risen to 2,375,546 cases and 41,607 victims.
