Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt the way is clear for the special investment program to maintain castles and gardens.

The finance committee of the state parliament released 100 million euros on Wednesday for a period of eight years, which the state must contribute, announced the state chancellery and ministry for culture on Wednesday in Magdeburg.

State and Culture Minister Rainer Robra (CDU) said: “This is good news for the cultural state of Saxony-Anhalt.

For the first time we will be able to renovate our cultural treasures, which are combined in the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, more comprehensively and present them in an appealing way for cultural tourism.

The road to the 200 million euro special investment program was long.

The original plan was to set up a castle foundation for Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.

While Saxony-Anhalt was ready, there was resistance in Thuringia.

In the end, the budget committee of the Bundestag decided last Thursday to hand over the investment funds of 100 million euros each and additional project funds to the two states or their foundations.

The federal government's 100 million must be co-financed by the state in the same amount.

The Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt is implementing the special investment program in Saxony-Anhalt.

The cultural foundation includes 18 cathedrals, palaces and castles, including the Magdeburg Cathedral and the Moritzburg in Halle.
