Magdeburg (dpa) - In the coalition conflict over a higher radio fee, the Saxony-Anhalt Christian Democrats get support from the candidate for the CDU federal chairmanship, Friedrich Merz.

Merz told the “Münchner Merkur” (Thursday) that he understood the strict negative attitude of the CDU parliamentary group.

"Especially in times of Corona you can view the fee increase critically."

At the same time, Merz advised that the contribution discussion should be decoupled from the debate on dealing with the AfD.

It is completely unimportant what opinion the AfD has on the broadcasting fee.

The 65-year-old took over the reasoning of the state CDU, according to which the coalition agreement with the SPD and the Greens literally agreed on stable contributions.

On this basis, the coalition should find a solution.

Whether this will succeed is completely open.

On Wednesday, the media committee of the state parliament postponed a decision on a new interstate broadcasting agreement by one week.

The quarreling coalition partners want to use the time to commit themselves to a unified line.

The CDU wants to prevent an increase in contributions in any case, as media politician Markus Kurz confirmed on Wednesday.

Most recently, she argued that due to the corona pandemic, the financial requirements of the public sector would have to be recalculated.

However, all other federal states have already approved the interstate treaty including premium increases or have indicated that they will do so.

Saxony-Anhalt is the only shaky candidate on this issue.

The SPD and the Greens want to support the contract.

The Christian Democrats could still get their way: Together with the AfD, they have a majority in the state parliament to block the increase in the radio license fee by 86 cents to 18.36 euros.

The SPD and the Greens announced that in the event of a joint vote by the CDU and AfD, they would no longer see any basis for the continued existence of the coalition.
