Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Hunters in North Rhine-Westphalia shot more game in the past hunting year than in previous years.

In deer, the number of animals killed exceeded 100,000 for the first time at more than 105,000, as the NRW Ministry of the Environment announced on Wednesday.

In addition, more than 7,400 red deer were shot.

For fallow deer, the previous record from 2013/2014 (around 4850 animals) was exceeded with almost 5400 animals.

With more than 64 700 animals, the second highest value since 2017/18 was achieved for wild boars.

By hunting and tending the game population, the hunters made "an important contribution to the prevention of African swine fever (ASF) and reforestation," said NRW Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU).

In anticipation of the amendment to the Federal Hunting Act, the state government intends to enable wild boar hunting with the help of night target devices.

"We must not slacken in our efforts to prevent excessive wild boar populations."

The hunting route statistics include all wild animals hunted in the respective hunting year from April 1st to March 31st.

This also includes losses from traffic accidents and other wild animals found dead.
