Wiesloch (dpa / lsw) - Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) wants to be able to better serve the Chinese market together with its long-term sales partner Masterwork.

The production joint venture is to take over some of the machine parts previously manufactured at the German location, the company announced on Wednesday.

Start of production is planned for the beginning of 2021 at the Masterwork site in Tianjin.

With a turnover of 300 million euros, China is the largest market for Heidelberger Druck.

According to the information, Masterwork is the largest Chinese manufacturer of sheet cutters and hot foil stamping machines.

"With the increasing purchase of locally manufactured parts, we are increasing our competitiveness in this growth market significantly," said CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.

According to a spokesman, the long-planned move has no impact on the staff.

Heidelberg announced in the spring that it would cut 1,600 jobs.

The number of employees is currently 11,300 worldwide.

Heidelberg sees itself strengthened by a survey by the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering.

This showed that the member companies based in China rate the business positively for the first time since 2018.

Industry, including mechanical engineering, has recovered after the pandemic was contained.

As already announced, Heidelberg, based in Wiesloch (Rhein-Neckar district), expects sales for the year as a whole to be well below the previous year's level of a good 2.3 billion euros.

In terms of earnings, the AG assumes that it will improve significantly compared to the previous year, but it will still be in the red.
