Bochum (dpa / lnw) - A suspicious Christmas letter and heart problems of a 52-year-old have caused a larger fire service in Bochum.

The fire department in Bochum announced on Tuesday that the man found the letter in his mailbox without a sender or addressee.

After opening the envelope, he noticed the heart problem and dialed 911.

As a precaution, the control center alerted not only the ambulance but also a fire engine.

While an emergency doctor was looking after the man and his family, firefighters in chemical protective suits went into the apartment, examined the suspicious letter - and gave the all-clear.

They did not find any dangerous substances.

"The cause of the circulatory problems was probably a known previous illness in the man," said a fire department spokesman.

The man was taken to a hospital for further examination.

And the letter?

According to the fire brigade, the envelope read "Only open in front of the camera".

According to the police, the content is said to have been "a multi-page Christmas story".

In any case, the letter was "secured in a way that spares the trace".

It is now being checked whether there could be a criminal offense, said a spokesman.

Several media had previously reported on the operation.
