Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony wants to promote the acquisition of commercially used cargo bikes.

As the Ministry of Transport announced on Tuesday, there will be a subsidy of up to 500 euros for a new cargo bike with a payload of up to 150 kilograms.

Up to 1500 euros are earmarked for electrically assisted cargo bikes (pedelecs).

Small and medium-sized enterprises, associations, municipalities and special-purpose associations can apply for funding.

According to the ministry, up to five cargo bikes can be funded per applicant.

"For the rapidly growing commercial traffic of delivery and parcel services on the so-called last mile, especially in urban areas, the flexible cargo bikes can represent a good and, above all, environmentally friendly alternative," said Transport Minister Martin Dulig (SPD). The Saxon funding now also serves the popular segment of smaller cargo bikes and pedelecs, it said. The purchase of larger cargo bikes with a payload of more than 150 kilograms is already funded by the federal government.
