Düsseldorf (dpa) - In the debate about a million dollar order from the North Rhine-Westphalian state government to the van Laack fashion company about protective equipment in the corona pandemic, Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) accused the state SPD of defamation.

"I think the allegations of the SPD are shabby and indecent," Laschet said on Tuesday in a joint press conference with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) in Düsseldorf.

In the NRW-SPD, "defamation is part of the stylistic device," said Laschet.

“But the new quality now is that it goes beyond my person into my family, without any consideration.

I firmly reject that. "

The SPD parliamentary group had made a small inquiry about the deal from April after it became known that Laschet's son had made contact with van Laack.

Johannes «Joe» Laschet is a fashion blogger and has been in business with van Laack for years.

The SPD had declared that it had to be ruled out that personal relationships played a role here.

At the beginning of the pandemic, there were not enough masks and protective gowns, said Laschet.

The fight for the masks was "brutal".

The state government was desperately looking for serious offers from NRW and asked everyone.

"We used the phone on sore hands, asked, pushed, begged."

Of course he also asked his son, who knows his way around the textile industry, said Laschet.

He gave him the contact to van Laack.

Laschet said he called the CEO on a Sunday evening.

"My son did what anyone would have done in the situation: help without any wages, without any benefit, without any penny."
