Hamburg (dpa) - The economic development organizations of the northern German states have come together to form the green hydrogen initiative HY-5.

They want to make the north the strongest future region for green hydrogen.

An OECD study confirms that northern Germany is particularly suitable for building a green hydrogen economy, the initiative announced.

The region has unique locational advantages for the generation of renewable energies and a large purchase potential for green hydrogen - especially in industry.

Accordingly, a green hydrogen economy is to be created in northern Germany by 2035.

The states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein combine a high level of experience and know-how in the field of sustainable technologies and energies as well as a high-performance infrastructure, explained the initiative with a view to wind energy.

According to the North German Hydrogen Strategy, at least 500 megawatts of electrolysis capacity for the production of green hydrogen should be installed by 2025, and by 2030 the capacity should increase to at least five gigawatts.

The locational advantages of the north include more than a dozen seaports with logistics and import terminals that want to expand their capacities for the import of hydrogen.

There would also be a hydrogen pipeline, geological underground formations such as storage caverns and an extensive natural gas network infrastructure.

And the north is also ahead in the field of research.

Scientists at two dozen universities and technical colleges, more than 20 Fraunhofer institutes and Helmholtz centers work within a radius of a good 200 kilometers.
