According to a media report, a Chinese probe for collecting rock samples landed on the moon.

The lander of the spaceship named after the Chinese moon goddess "Chang'e 5" landed "successfully" on the surface on Tuesday, as China's state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing a source in the space agency.

The aim of the Chinese mission is to bring rock samples back to earth for the first time in 44 years.

Before that, only the USA and the Soviet Union had succeeded.

The probe is to use a robotic arm to drill a two-meter-deep hole and collect moon rocks.

It should then bring back around two kilograms to earth.

"Chang'e 5" was launched on November 23rd from the space station in Wenchang on the southern Chinese island of Hainan.

After the samples have been collected, it's time to return to Earth.

Researchers hope that the potential new samples will provide further knowledge about the earth's satellite and the solar system in general.
