Berlin / Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The President of the German Association of Cities, Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung, has welcomed the update of the “Leipzig Charter” on European urban development.

The “New Leipzig Charter” carries the strong message that the common good should be emphasized in the future, the SPD politician said on Monday.

According to the City Council, the ministers responsible for urban development of the European Union had previously adopted the strategy paper.

The cities are facing acute challenges, explained Jung.

These included climate change, the integration of immigrants and digitization.

"With the New Leipzig Charter, the European partners are formulating the claim to maintain and improve the quality of life in all European cities."

The previous charter was signed in 2007 and has now been updated.
