The absurd situation of the AfD is nowhere as clearly recognizable as in what was decided at the federal party conference on Sunday afternoon.

A motion demanded that party leader Jörg Meuthen should be disapproved of because of his criticism of AfD members in his opening speech and because of “divisive behavior”.

This request was not refused.

Rather, the majority decided not to deal with it.

But by the time that was decided, the 500 or so delegates had been discussing the motion for more than two hours in heated debate.

So they decided: What has happened here will not happen.

Such absurdity is only possible in a party based on absurdity.

Because the AfD is not a party.

It is the illusion of being able to combine two parties of roughly equal size under one name.

This only works if the basic rules of logic are violated.

That finally proved itself over the weekend.

One party consists of those who use every opportunity out of deep conviction - from migration to climate protection to Corona - to cross the borders of the democratic order and forge communities of right-wing extremists and indignantly motivated people.

The chairman of this party is Jörg Meuthen only formally, not politically.

The other party consists of those who slide far to the right on a crooked path, but who respect the limits of propriety and the constitution and want to engage in factual debates.

This party is behind Meuthen.

Its members applauded lively on Saturday when he attacked the other party's actions in the corona pandemic.

He criticized the downplaying of the Nazi era by designating the Infection Protection Act as an “enabling law”, false claims about an alleged “Corona dictatorship” and the connection with the conspiracy ideologues of the “lateral thinkers”.

It is unclear whether those who applauded him were self-critical of themselves and their own tendencies towards such behavior.

Or whether they only see something like this in others as a kind of splitting off.

But that too would show that they in any case wish not to have anything to do with the other party.

This break cannot be cemented.

The protection of the constitution must take care of the right-wing extremist party.

The other party must be looked after by those who dare to bring right conservatives and libertarians who have already drifted far back to their senses.
