Human rights: Algiers criticizes the European Parliament's resolution

The Algerian authorities sharply criticize a European Parliament resolution, adopted Thursday, November 26, which denounces in particular the "deterioration of the human rights situation in Algeria".

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounces interference in the country's internal affairs.

It is a resolution adopted in "

urgency

", Thursday, by the European parliamentarians which is at the origin of this anger of Algiers.

In this text, the MEPs "

strongly condemn the escalation of illegal and arbitrary arrests and detentions

" as well as the "

judicial harassment

" of which journalists, human rights defenders and lawyers in Algeria are victims.

Parliamentarians also express their concern for journalist Khaled Drareni, who is serving a two-year prison sentence, for covering a march by the Hirak protest movement at the beginning of this year 2020.

European parliamentarians also point the finger at several anti-freeze laws and ask the authorities to guarantee the right of all Algerians to participate in the democratic process.

Algiers denounces the "

 " of this resolution and considers that this is " 

a string of insults and insults against the Algerian people and their institutions

 ", we can read in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Algerian authorities castigate a text tinged with “ 

paternalism

 ” in short, a “

crude and inadmissible 

interference 

in its internal affairs.

Such a resolution " 

can only undermine Algeria's relations with its partners,

 " the statement concluded.
