Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Rot-Weiss Essen remains in the Regionalliga West without losing the season, but has suffered a damper in the battle for promotion to the 3rd soccer league.

On Sunday, coach Christian Neidhart's team had to be satisfied with a 1: 1 (0: 0) in a duel between the two former Bundesliga clubs at Alemannia Aachen.

Essen still ranks first after the 18th matchday with 38 points, but in the long-distance duel for the championship lead, Borussia Dortmund II shortened the gap to RWE to three points with their 3-0 (0-0) win at SV Bergisch Gladbach.

In addition, Dortmund played two games less.

Essen had taken the lead in Aachen through Dennis Grote (58th minute), but Hamdi Dahmani (83rd) equalized for Aachen in the final phase.

For RWE it was the fifth draw in the 16th game of the season, all other games were won by Essen, who also reached the second DFB Cup main round by beating Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld.

The second in the table BVB had received their first defeat of the season in a 2-1 draw against SV Rödinghausen last Wednesday, but successfully solved the task in Bergisch Gladbach with late hits.

Steffen Tigges (74th) and Dominik Wanner (77th / 88th) met for the Bundesliga club's offspring.

Aachen had reported before the game that the tests of two players in the scheduled Covid-19 rapid tests on Saturday had been positive.

Accordingly, both players showed no symptoms and initially waited in isolation at home for the result of the following PCR test.

The tests of all other team members of the Alemannia were negative, the staging of the game was accordingly safe.
