Washington Post reported that Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Washington DC, the first black cardinal in the United States, said in an interview that "I want to share the voices of African Americans with the Pope."

Before the appointment ceremony, Cardinal Gregory told The Associated Press that "the need for racial reconciliation is stronger than ever."

Cardinal Gregory is said to have taken the lead in resolving the problem when protests against racial discrimination spread in the wake of the death of a black man, George Floyd, in the knees of a white policeman in May.

The Washington Post says the challenge is for Cardinal Gregory to get in touch with Joe Biden, who will be the first Catholic president after John F. Kennedy.
