• Crime Rostagno, life sentence for two Cosa Nostra bosses

February 19, 2018 The Court of Assizes of Appeal of Palermo confirmed the sentence of life imprisonment issued in the first instance for the boss Vincenzo Virga, accused of the murder of the journalist Mauro Rostagno, which took place on September 26, 1988. Second instance judges however, they acquitted Vito Mazara for not having committed the act, indicated as the material perpetrator of the crime, who in the first instance had also received a life sentence.

The judges therefore confirmed what was established in the first instance: namely that the journalist-sociologist was eliminated because, even through the screens of the private TV Rtc, he had lifted the veil on the interests of Cosa Nostra in Trapani.

The Mafia motive therefore holds up as can be seen from the conviction of the boss who at the time was the provincial "representative" of Cosa Nostra Trapani.

While evidently the clues against the alleged killer, former boss of Valderice, were not considered sufficient.

The result of the DNA test found on the remains of the gun used for the crime had been produced against him.

But the defense arguments focused on the genetic expertise and asked the assize court of appeal to re-examine the technicians, arguing that the findings extracted were not sufficient to reach certain conclusions.

Thesis that, in all probability, was shared by the judges.

With his services, according to the indictment, Rostagno would have "revealed the new face of the mafia in the city": the transition from traditional organization to modern and dynamic structure, intertwining with occult powers, new alliances, control of the big circle procurement.

For years, investigators underestimated the mafia context in which the crime had matured and followed private stories, internal conflicts within the Saman community, founded by the sociologist, and feuds between former Lotta Continua militants, a movement to which Rostagno belonged.
