China News Service, Lanzhou, November 27 (Liu Jie) As the only authoritative center in Gansu Province that can carry out comprehensive ECMO medical treatment for critical illnesses, the ECMO Center of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University has treated more than 100 cases in the past year.

The treatment of diseases involves acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, severe myocarditis, severe pneumonia and other critical illnesses. The patient is "pulled back" from the death line, and the oldest patient is 90 years old.

At night, the busyness of the day has dissipated, and people have entered the most relaxing moment of the day.

But here, in the CCU, the Heart Center of Lanzhou University First Hospital, the tense rhythm never stops, and changes happen at any time.

On the evening of November 11, when a busy day of work was about to end, a "help call" broke the calm again.

"In Pingliang City Hospital, the patient had acute myocardial infarction. Considering the left main stem, the blood pressure of the high-dose vasoactive drugs could not be maintained...".

After nearly 8 hours’ drive, the patient was safely and quickly transferred to the emergency department of Lanzhou University First Hospital and underwent coronary angiography and stent implantation with the assistance of ECMO. The criminal blood vessel was successfully opened. After careful treatment by the team, the patient has been safely withdrawn from ECMO. Heart function gradually recovered.

This is the 100th patient cured by the ECMO team of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University under the close collaboration of cardiovascular, critical, emergency, and pediatrics.

According to the First Hospital of Lanzhou University, during this year’s new coronary pneumonia, ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, commonly known as "artificial lung"), which has gained public attention and expectations, is currently the most advanced support method for severe cardiopulmonary failure. It has won for patients The last treatment time is known as the "life-saving artifact", representing the highest level of emergency first aid for the medical institutions and the region.

On March 14, 2019, under the leadership of Professor Zhang Zheng, Dean of Gansu Cardiovascular Hospital and Director of the Heart Center, Professor Zhang Zheng, and Professor Bai Ming, Deputy Dean of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University, the Heart Center of Lanzhou University First Hospital successfully carried out the first extracorporeal membrane in Gansu Province. Pulmonary oxygenation (ECMO) combined with intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support high-risk complex percutaneous coronary intervention.

This is also the first hospital in Lanzhou University to complete the first ECMO combined with IABP support for coronary artery high-risk complicated disease surgery, opening a new chapter in the development of cardiac critical illness in Gansu.

In addition, the Heart Center of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University has expanded the application of ECMO technology to assist in the operation of complicated coronary artery disease.

In the past, such patients may have risks of shock and cardiac arrest during the operation, which caused the operation to not be performed normally, and even life-threatening.

The center applied ECMO to a total of 33 such patients, which not only ensured patient safety, but also increased the success rate of surgery.

All 33 patients were successfully weaned, recovered and discharged, and the oldest patient was 90 years old.

Behind a hundred cases of life, every time a "race of death" must be won.

ECMO treatment is equivalent to giving life another chance, and each application itself is a race against death.

After more than a year of hard work, ECMO has become a routine technology in the First Hospital of Lanzhou University.

In 2020, the center was approved by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission to establish the Gansu Provincial Cardiovascular Critical Diseases and ECMO Technology Alliance. With the strong support of the hospital leaders and department leaders, the center lasted 2 months and had a cumulative driving distance of 7,100 kilometers, covering all regions. Completed the inspection of 63 hospitals in Gansu Province, signing of agreements for licensing, ECMO technology promotion and presentations.

At the same time, the regional ECMO treatment system has been improved to become a regional ECMO treatment and transfer center, making ECMO the last line of defense for the treatment of critically ill patients in the province.
