The city of Passau has imposed strict exit restrictions in view of the sharp increase in the number of corona infections.

They should start on Saturday and initially last a week, as Mayor Jürgen Dupper (SPD) announced on Friday.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, Passau had a corona incidence value of almost 440 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days on Friday.

Passau residents are only allowed to leave their apartment for a valid reason, for example to go to work, to the doctor or to go shopping.

The police will monitor compliance with the restrictions, stressed Dupper.

"The valid reasons must be made credible."

Meetings of all kinds are limited to a maximum of ten participants and a maximum duration of one hour.

There is a strict mask requirement.

Churchgoers also have to wear masks in their places in church services.

In addition, the city imposes a ban on alcohol in public places and prescribes alternating lessons for grades 7 to 11 - with the exception of final classes at middle and secondary schools.

Classes 1 to 6 and the final classes will continue to be taught face-to-face.

Loosening from incidence 300

If you want to visit a relative in a nursing home, you have to do a quick test beforehand to prove that you are not infected.

Wearing an FFP2 mask is also mandatory.

Employees in old people's and nursing homes are now obliged to have a quick test done every week.

With an incidence of 439.4 (as of Friday), Passau is currently Germany's number two hotspot after the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia with almost 630 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days.

According to information on the Robert Koch Institute's website on Friday, Passau and Hildburghausen were the only areas with a seven-day incidence of over 400.

The new restrictions in Passau could not be relaxed again until the number of infections fell to an incidence of 300, said Dupper.

"Maybe it has to go further down, too."
