Berlin (dpa) - The Humboldt Forum in the partially reconstructed Berlin City Palace remains closed this year.

With a view to the corona-related measures, the first partial opening of the huge culture and exhibition center, which was last announced for December 17th, has been canceled.

Instead, from December 16, there will be digital insights in the form of live streams and online tours, as the Humboldt Forum announced on Friday.

Further digital offers are being examined, said General Director Hartmut Dorgerloh.

After years of delay and cost increases to now 677 million euros, the Humboldt Forum is to open in several steps.

Initially, a few parts of the approximately 40,000 square meter building were to be made accessible;

According to previous announcements, the house will only be accessible on all levels at the turn of the year 2021/22.

The Humboldt Forum will in future be used by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation with two of its museums, the State of Berlin and the Humboldt University.

Exhibits from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania as well as objects on the history of Berlin are to be shown.

The colonial past of exhibits is already being discussed.

The construction according to plans by the Italian architect Franco Stella is also controversial; the facade area is largely a reconstruction of the former Hohenzollern city palace that was destroyed in 1950.

Criticism was recently triggered by the cross and dome with a widely visible biblical saying.

This calls for the submission of all people to Christianity.
