Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin CDU has sharply criticized the decision of the Berlin Senate not to loosen the rules for private meetings at Christmas.

"The five-person regulation over the festive season is insensitive, alien to life and does not do justice to the importance of Christmas," said the Berlin CDU chairman, Kai Wegner, on Friday.

"I appeal to the Senate to follow the line of the other federal states for Christmas Eve and the Christmas holidays."

The Senate decided on Thursday not to implement the easing of the contact restrictions agreed between the federal and state governments for private meetings over the holidays.

In Berlin, a maximum of five people should be allowed to meet for private get-togethers over the holidays, not including children up to the age of 14.

On Wednesday, the federal and state governments agreed on a maximum of ten people plus children up to 14 years of age for meetings “with close family or friends” from December 23 to January 1.

“You can get together as a family at Christmas without having to hug each other.

You don't have to exhaust the permitted framework at any price, ”said Wegner.

The measures to contain the corona virus are basically correct.

Berlin must reduce the high number of infections as soon as possible in order to protect life.

"The Senate is called upon to finally enforce and sanction the existing rules in Berlin."

If “wild gatherings” of people are not prevented, no reversal of the trend in the infection process is possible.

AfD parliamentary group leader Georg Pazderski accused the Senate of wanting to "spoil" Christmas for people.

"With the bans now set, the family celebration is made almost impossible for many," he said on Friday.

"Christmas is deliberately destroyed: tears instead of joy, loneliness instead of warmth, disproportionality instead of tradition."

That is unacceptable, said Pazderski, because: “A family who gets together for one evening poses no danger to our country.

Quite the opposite: for many - especially families and children - a beautiful Christmas is a moment of happiness that we urgently need in times of Corona. "
