Les Sables-d'Olonne / France (dpa / lno) - The Hamburg circumnavigator Boris Herrmann has moved up to fourth place in the Vendée Globe.

On the 18th day at sea, Herrmann overtook Frenchman Kevin Excoffier ("PRB") with his yacht "Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco" in the South Atlantic.

The top trio is made up of three French in the leading Charlie Dalin (“Apivia”), Thomas Ruyant (“LinkedOut”) and the 61-year-old record participant Jean Le Cam.

The long-running Briton Alex Thomson ("Hugo Boss") has dropped to ninth place after the first 5000 nautical miles after a break on board and a lightning repair at sea.

The second-placed Ruyant has been struggling with a broken foil (wing) since Wednesday, but can initially continue sailing without its use.

Due to different navigation strategies, the leading group on the Cape of Good Hope course has split in two.

The fastest solo skippers are expected to return after their non-stop circumnavigation of the world in mid-January in the port of departure and destination of Les Sables-d'Olonne in France.
