  • The Christmas lights will be officially launched this Friday evening during an event prohibited to the public but visible on social networks.

  • To avoid gatherings, many events will be digital.

  • Still, the lights, the big tree, the unexpected events in the four corners of the city or the hundreds of luminous lanterns will invite visitors to revisit the city.

This Christmas in Strasbourg, it won't be the big show, but it will be hot all the same.

And for the "Christmas magic" to operate throughout the city, the great fundamentals have been retained, even if the idea of going from chalet to chalet with a glass of mulled wine in hand is definitely a tale of the past.

Covid-19 requires, the authorities want to avoid gatherings and crowds at all costs.

This is what you can expect if the desire to come and stroll in the streets of the Christmas capital tempts you ... Because magic, for those who want to see it, will be around the corner, for adults and for the little ones.

Where it all begins

No need to travel for the traditional kick off of the illuminations, this Friday evening at 6 p.m.

As if by magic, the big show is gone.

No stage, no star singer on stage.

No, this year you will have to be connected because the event will be visible only on social networks.

The launch festivities, like the majority of the events, will indeed be digital: a TV show-like platform, not open to the public, located at Aubette, will host various speakers for more than an hour, including Mayor Jeanne Barseghian. or even the director of the Vitrines de Strasbourg merchants association Pierre Bardet.

And to heat up the mood, the event's godfather, tenor Amaury Vassili, will vibrate his vocal cords delayed because the moment has already been recorded, like other moments including visuals of the illuminated city.

My Christmas Tree

The heart of Christmas will beat even more this year around the big Christmas tree in place Kléber.

For selfies and souvenir photos, the popular but small platform is back, flanked by two musical angels who will watch over the traditional Alsatian village.

With a breathtaking view of the large tree dressed in 200 balls symbolizing the red apple of the Garden of Eden.

A fir tree that "will shine ensures the city, as in the past with a soft and warm light by candlelight that was hung on the branches of the fir tree in the homes.

So much for the warm atmosphere.

And if you are not passionate about the balls of the Christmas tree, you can always have fun calculating its angle of inclination, because it would seem that it is tilting a little this year ... The fairyland will also take over the whole place with clumps of fir trees, lanterns everywhere.

Lanterns which will also be present on the windows of downtown businesses.

Residents are also invited to decorate their windows with this same symbol by following the artist's tutorial to make their paper cut lantern.

Virtual pleasure

Of course, all of the city's streets will be adorned with lights, as will the Vauban dam or even the Rohan terrace.

In total, more than 700 trees will be decorated and illuminated in Christmas colors.

Note that this year, the blue tree will display a large bright "#Thank you".

Regarding cultural and event programming, the authorities do not want gatherings, so there will be no official program.

But the surprise of crossing a choir at the corner of the street, wandering artists, unexpectedly, are not to be excluded, quite the contrary.

On Place Kléber, two exhibitions will recall the symbols of Christmas and the history of the Christkindlsmärik market.

From December 15, Christmas concerts are planned but they could only be broadcast.

A digital and united Christmas

No chalets, but exhibitors will still be virtually present on the noel.strasbourg.eu site from Saturday.

A site where you cannot buy online but which will allow visitors to connect with numerous exhibitors, artisans and traders.

Finally, the Off market at Place Grimmeissen is going digital, with debates and concerts, all on the page www.marcheoffstrasbourg.fr.
