November 26, 2020 The decision on skiing is a national competence, not a European one, and individual countries must decide on it.

"Caution is needed in revoking anti-covid measures because this can cause the virus to resurface", is the thought of the European Union, which is working "to strengthen coordination between states and see if we can soon develop a recommendation approach" .

"Everyone is well aware that decisions on the opening" or closing of ski resorts "are a national competence" and not the EU.

This was said by the head spokesman of the European Commission Eric Mamer, during the online briefing with the press in Brussels.

The Commission can make "recommendations" to Member States, but, at least so far, it has never made specific recommendations for skiing.

In view of the Christmas holidays, however, says the spokesman for Health Stefan de Keersmaecker, "we are thinking about how to strengthen collaboration between the Member States".

The Commission therefore recommends, but "it is then up to the Member States to assess the epidemiological situations" and decide accordingly, concludes Mamer.
