Karlsruhe (dpa) - Everyone is talking about Christmas in the Corona year - how will medical care be like at this time?

From the personal point of view of the Karlsruhe family doctor Stefan Mathias Fuchs, the situation will worsen over the holidays.

The medical on-call service was already "hopelessly overrun" at this time, said Fuchs of the German press agency.

"One colleague represents nine others."

He will also close his practice over the holidays to allow himself and his employees to relax.

"We gave everything at the beginning of the pandemic," says Fuchs.

"At some point the strength will be gone."

The general practitioner operates a specialized practice in which, according to the information, he treats up to 40 suspected corona cases every day during a two-hour consultation hour.

Among them are six to eight corona infected, says Fuchs.

The other patients are usually sick with a common winter infection.

In the absence of test capacities, not everyone is currently being tested.

"We are noticing a bit at the moment that the numbers are no longer rising that much."

In return, more patients would come with side effects: "They feel bad for a longer period of time, they feel weak and have trouble concentrating."

With a view to Christmas, Fuchs says: "We could celebrate a normal festival if everyone were disciplined."

From an epidemiological point of view, this would mean that everyone would stay at home until then.

"But we are social beings, we want to celebrate," said the doctor.

"If a valve is opened somewhere now, it will be made up for what was suppressed for eight weeks."

Therefore, the crucial question is whether it will be possible to significantly reduce the number of infections before Christmas.
